Aug 24 - Sept 11

All of the assignments on this page are  due on Sunday September 11th. Please read completely and thoroughly through the page.

MESSAGE BOARD

Download the handouts for more complete instruction on using the Message Board. The first handout, How to Register, walks you through the process of registering so that you can post to the class message board. You are to use the same login and password you do on the CSM network (first initial of your first name followed by your last name and ending with the last two digits of the Power Campus ID or student id). You will have to fill in this information in the registration process. And be sure to fill in your full name in the Publicly Displayed area. This is all explained in this handout.

The second handout, How to Login, Update Your Profile and Post Messages will allow you to begin to participate in the Message Board. It is  important to do this right away! As you will see in reading the assignment there are a lot of new skill to learn when taking this online class. And, more will be introduce as the class progresses. It is important to not get behind. For example, we want to work out any problem you may have with the message board now this week, before we are moving on to something else.

Every week there will be a new topic so you have three topics due by Sunday, September 11th.

Topic: 01 - Introductions and What Do You Hope to Learn About Computers? - Due 8/28/05

Topic: 02 - Why the College of Saint Mary - Due 09/06/05

Topic: 03 - Windows XP Operating System - Due 09/11/05

BOOK ORIENTATION AND BOOKONCD

New Perspectives Computer Concepts 8th Edition Introductory book and the CD NP5 BookOnCD
We will be using this CD that came with this book throughout the course so this exercise will help you to become familiar with it. If you are having any problems with it I want to get them worked out this week so be sure to do the activities right away

Download the Handout: Orientation Section and follow the directions on the handout to complete the following activities. In the process you will create a tracking disk that will record all of your assignments.

  • Finish all QuickChecks in the Orientation Chapter using the BookOnCD and a tracking disk.
  • Take a Practice Test as a Pretest for Chapter 1
  • Complete the First New Perspective Lab for Chapter 1

Whether you are saving these activities to a tracking disk on a floppy disk or you change the location (as described in the handout), you will create a file called TRACKING.TK2.

You cannot directly open this file, you must use the directions in the handout on view a tracking disk to see the results. However, you will send this file TRACKING.TK2 to your instructor as an e-mail attachment for grading purposes.

WINDOWS XP

Using Lab Manual New Perspectives Microsoft Windows XP - Brief
(Due 09/11/05)
You will use the small lab manual in your packet of books purchased. This lab manual for Windows XP consists of two tutorials: Tutorial 1 and Tutorial 2 and both tutorials have two Sessions or sections. You are to read through and do all the activities in these Tutorials.

Tutorial 1 (including Session 1.1 and 1.2):  There is not anything that you will have to turn in, but you should read through and become familiar with the material.

Tutorial 2 (including Session 2.1 and 2.2): There are data files you will need to complete this Tutorial. Use the handout on How to Download the Data Files for Windows XP Tutorial 2. Click on this link to download the handout.

In Session 2.1 of Tutorial 2, you will create a WordPad document called Practice Text. Page 2.14 starts an activity on Printing this document. While you will send this document to me with the others you create in the next session, you do not have to print this. But, do be sure to read through and become familiar with the Print Dialog box.

In Session 2.2 of Tutorial 2, you will learn how to create folders and move and copy files. You will use the files you download for this. The directions on p. 2.18 and 2.19 have you access these files from the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) drive. However, these files will be on your computer where you downloaded them.

When you are finished with these tutorials, first download the handout Using Filzip and then download the Filzip program. Since the drop box will not be update for this first week you will send the zipped folder and files  to me as an attachment at jlortz@shf.org
