Textbooks: Text: Carey, New Perspectives on Creating Web Pages with HTML and Dynamic HTML -- Comprehensive, Course Technology, 2001.
Materials: You will need to purchase at least two floppy disks for the lab.
Prerequisite: BIS101 or Program Director permission.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is an introductory course in the design and development of HTML-based Web pages. Since creating Web pages involves both an understanding of good design
principles and a strong knowledge of the tools used to create those pages, the class will have a dual focus. One will be on learning to use HTML and the tools associated with it, and the second will be on what
constitutes good page design. Computer imaging will also be discussed.
STUDENT OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course students will be equipped to:
--Define terms associated with the World Wide Web and the hypertext markup language.
--Demonstrate an understanding of the various tools used to create HTML Web pages.
--Demonstrate an understanding of the images and graphics used on the Web.
--Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts and procedures required to develop well designed Web sites.
--Demonstrate problem-solving skills.
--Demonstrate how to design and write efficient, readable, and well structured Web pages using HTML and other support languages.
--Realize the challenge and fun of designing Web pages.
Evaluation:
The above outcomes will be measured through class discussions, message-board discussions, in-class exercises, lab exercises, hands-on Web page development,
and an exam.
GRADE DETERMINATION:
Exam 20%
Attendance and Class Participation 10%
Assignments and Exercises 45%
Final Project 25%
CLASS POLICIES:
Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. If you are absent for any reason it is your
responsibility to find out the assignments and to turn assignments in when they are due. All assignments and handouts will be posted on the Web site (www.two-dogs.com) for download. If you miss class, please make sure you check the Web site!
Exam:
There will be one exam given during the semester. The exam will test you general Internet terminology and concepts, and on basic HTML editing and syntax.
Participation: As expected, attendance is an important part of participation. It will also be essential that exercises dealing with
HTML be completed in order to fully understand class lectures and discussions. Participation also includes he posting of messages on the class online message board at Two-Dogs.Com.
Projects: The Final project will involve the creation of a Web site using the HTML,
design, and imaging techniques we cover the first part of the semester. You will decide the site theme using certain guidelines that are passed out in class.
