New handout available on working with the student data files

I've had some questions concerning unarchiving and using the student data files with your homework, and have created a new, more detailed handout on how to unarchive the files, copy them to your homework area, and then use them. To get the handout, RIGHT click on this link, and choose SAVE TARGET AS. Save it to your Windows Desktop, then double-click the file. You are downloading a regular Word file.

Important Message about Tuesday Night Class This Week!!!

Due to some unforeseen difficulties, I will NOT be in the computer lab this Tuesday night, January 23rd. You are welcome to still come into the lab and work, but I will not be there. An e-mail message alerting you to this was also sent out this morning.

There have been some questions regarding your archive file and opening up homework data files. I'm in the process of putting together a handout that will better explain the process, and will e-mail you later today when it's available to get from this site.

Please e-mail me with any questions you might have before next week's open lab.

Welcome to BIS220, Spring 2007!

Scroll down and become familiar with the options on this page. You should be able to click on the Syllabus link in the Handout section to download a copy of the syllabus. Scroll down to the bottom of this page to see the Instructions for Downloading Handouts.

There are two things that you should make sure and do EACH WEEK for this class!

  1. First, check this announcement board for notices.
  2. Second, leave your replies to the new topic posted on the Message Board each week. There are more complete instruction on using the Message Board in the handouts section at the top of this page,in the two handouts: How to Register and How to Login, Update Your Profile, and Post Replies.

Remember that on the Message Board, you should leave one reply to the main topic of the week, and two other replies to respond to what two others have said.

You will usually have several weeks to complete various sections in the book New Perspective Microsoft Office 2003 Second Course. Under the Class Pages section towards the top of this page, you will see a link called Assignments. This will take you to the top page of the Assignment sections. On this page you will see links to each group of assignments.

HOW TO HAND IN YOUR WORD HOMEWORK

Most of your homework will consist of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access files that you create as you work through your Office Lab Tutorial book. In many cases, you don't just create one file, but many files during the assignment. The easiest way to turn in an assignment that consists of multiple files is to use an archiving program. The instructions which follow, tell you how to get started using an archiving program to turn in your assignments.

NOTE: The first assignments you'll turn in using the archiving program will be your Microsoft Word assignments.

1 - Download the "Using FilZip" document from the links at the top of this page, beneath Handouts & Downloads. This handout has instructions for downloading and installing a program called FilZip, which is a free "archiving" program. An archiving program lets you take a series of files (such as your homework files) and compress them into a single, archive (or Zip) file. This is the file you send me as an e-mail attachment. Note that as you archive your files into a single zip file, the files are copied into the zip file, NOT moved. This means your original files are still on your computer, safe and sound.

2 - Download and Install the FilZip program, from the above links list. See the Using FilZip document for instructions.

3 - Try archiving your Word homework files.

The skill of creating archives is not a waste of your time, since knowing how to do this can help you in any situation where you have a number of files to send to someone, and you want to save time

If you are already comfortable using some other program to create ZIP files (such as WinZip or even Windows XP itself), you can certainly use that program. We make FilZip available since it is a free program.

ALTERNATIVE: If you have problems using FilZip, as an alternative you can simply attach one or more of your homework files to an e-mail message, and send them that way. I would PREFER you use FilZip, but you can use this attachment method as an alternative.

SOFTWARE VERSIONS
Because there are differences in Office versions, you  must use Office 2003 for your assignments. Older versions of Office will not work for all the assignments. If you don't have this version at home, you'll probably have to use the CSM lab computers, which do have Office 2003.

If you are in need of software, and want to take advantage of academic pricing, you can visit the UNO bookstore (take your student ID with you), or check out the CDW web site (http://www.cdwg.com/shop/profiles/education.asp). You'll need to verify your academic status with them, but their prices are pretty good.

If you do decide to purchase Microsoft Office 2003, be aware that there are different "packages" you can get. The most common is the Student and Teach Edition, which often runs for about $120.00. Although this is a great price and a good buy, keep in mind that it does NOT include Access, which you'll need for the last set of assignments. You may have to visit the CSM computer lab to do Access.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU VALIDATE. I'll be sending out e-mails to those students I have on the class list who have not yet validated. Remember that if you fail to validate, CSM will remove you from the class list, and I believe, charge you a fee for reinstatement to the class.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING HANDOUTS.
The handouts listed here under the Handouts section and on the Assignments pages are in Microsoft Word (.doc) format.

When you click on the links, your browser will do one of three things depending on what browser you are using to view the web pages:

With Internet Explorer
Depending on what version of Internet Explorer you are using, when you click on the link, it may just open the file inside of the browser window. You can then save the file by going to the File menu and choosing Save As.

Some versions of Internet Explore will open the file in Microsoft Word. Again then you can then save the file by going to the File menu and choosing Save As.

If all the images don't seem to come in right when you are downloading a file, try right clicking on the link and choose Save Target As. Then choose where you want to save the file on your computer. After you are done, you will need to go out to your computer's hard drive and find the file and open it.

With Netscape / Firefox
Usually a dialog box will appear that asks if you want to Open the file or Save the file. You will click on the Option you want.

  1. If you choose to Open the file, your computer will automatically start Microsoft Word and open the file inside the program. The you will choose the Save As option from the File Menu in Word to save the file to your computer.
  2. If you choose the option to save the file the Save As dialog box will appear. Choose the folder where the document should be saved, then click Ok or Save to save it. After you have saved the file to your computer, you can use Microsoft Word to open it.

With American Online
The file will be opened inside the browser window. You can then save the file by going to the File menu and choosing Save As.

Just like with Internet Explorer, if all the images don't seem to come in right when you are downloading a file, try right clicking on the link and choose Save Target As. Then choose where you want to save the file on your computer. After you are done, you will need to go out to your computer's hard drive and find the file and open it.
